How to Pair an Oval Table with a Rectangular Area Rug

How to Pair an Oval Table with a Rectangular Area Rug

Pairing an oval table with a rectangular area rug is a great way of balancing a room, creating flow and making a space feel longer, or grounding an area in an open floor plan.

The combination is a popular one because the oval shaped table adds curves, and curves in a room, including the shape of the room, can make the space feel more welcoming while a correctly sized rectangular rug can make a room feel larger by providing a horizontal line across the floor bringing your eyes across the space helping it to feel wider.

It comes down to choosing the right proportions between the size of the rug, the table, and the space they’re in.  This starts by knowing the rules of rug sizing and how to position the furniture and oval table within the space for your desired effect.

The “rules” of rug sizes

Choosing a rug that is too small makes a space feel cramped by segmenting a room and causing it to feel disjointed.  If it is too close to the edges of an oval table, it can feel more like you are framing the shape which loses the benefit of the table’s curves.

But you don’t want to go too big and have it rubbing up against your walls either as this will take the place of your floor and lose the impact of the rug. Leave at least 10-24 inches between your rug and the wall so there is a clearly defined border, helping mark out an area or adding another horizontal line for lengthening effect when the area rug is in a closed room.

For open floor plans, you’ll want to use the all legs on the rug strategy from the lower section of this post as it grounds the area and makes it a focal point.

Pro-tip: Use painters tape to mark the dimensions of the rug you want to buy so you can sense how it will feel in the space.

Oval dining tables and rectangular rugs

In an open floor plan or ranch style home, a rectangular rug can help define and ground a dining area.  The grounding draws the eye to the oval table which softens the angular lines of the rug and helps keep the flow moving through the room.

A rectangular dining table may ground and keep eyes focused, but the purpose of a large and flowing space is to keep movement.  This is why oval shapes are better when you want the space to feel fluid and airy.  The lighting above the oval table can be pendants in orbs, cylinders, spheres, or a modern chandelier.  Just keep the curved, soft, and edge-free feel so the shape of the oval table can do its job.

Oval dining tables also are great for dedicated dining rooms with three or four walls and no open floor space.  The shape provides more space around the edges of the dining table set so people can move through a tight space more easily, while the rectangular rug can help to make smaller dining rooms feel larger.

In a dining area, center the rug on the table and chairs and provide enough coverage that all the legs of a chair will still be on the rug, even when they are pulled out.  The general rule of thumb for this is at least 2ft outside the furniture on all sides, but if your room allows it, give 3ft to provide more separation between the shapes.

For the oval table, take the longest dimension in each direction ensuring the chairs placed at the widest parts will not come off the rug, and add 4ft to each.

Pro-tip: If you have an extending table and you use it at its largest size on a regular basis, use the longer dimension.

For a table measuring 3’x6’ the rug should be at least 7’x10’ (or 9’x12’ if you are able to follow the 3ft principle).

Rectangular rug size for an oval coffee table

A rectangular rug combined with an elongated or sectional couch with a straight back in a living room or family room can create a widening effect by using horizontal lines.  But this can also make a room feel too controlled and geometric.

An oval coffee table is the perfect way to break these lines, making the area approachable and improving flow as there is more space at the edges for people to move around.  This could also mean less bumping into the table and less spills.

When choosing a rug size for a living area, there are two main choices.  Front legs on the area rug or all legs on the area rug.

Front legs on refers to the front legs of your couch and other major pieces of furniture sitting on the rug while the back legs remain off. This can make the rug seem larger without it needing to go too far under the furniture.  3 inches behind the legs is considered a good standard.

You also need to ensure you leave a good distance between the coffee table and other furniture to ensure people can move around, but not too far to reach to the table when sitting down.  14-18 inches is a good measurement to aim for.

Use the table’s widest dimensions to ensure enough clearance at every point by adding the width of the table to the coffee table clearance on either side (14”x2), plus 3” to leave enough room for furniture legs to get your minimum width.

For length you will want to consider the size of your couch as well as your coffee table by choosing a rug that leaves some overhang either side.

For a 72” couch and 48” coffee table (following the design rule of ⅔) you could use a 5’x8’ rug. This allows you to center the rug on the couch with the front legs on, giving enough space to use the oval coffee table while leaving room for other pieces of furniture to sit with their front legs on. The curves of the oval table will have enough space to draw the eye allowing the rectangular rug and couch to provide widening horizontal lines.

All legs on the rug

For larger living areas where the furniture sits in the middle of the room, let all of the legs sit on the rug to create a cohesive island in the room.  This also helps the horizontal lines of the rectangular rug stand out while the curves of the oval coffee table balance and soften the look.

Using a larger rug can help the coffee table blend in for a neater aesthetic compared to a smaller rug that draws more focus to the coffee table.  When you do bring attention to the table, it accentuates the impact of the curves making it an ideal choice for open floor plans.  With this combination the coffee table and decor on top can take center stage, and side tables with matching decor items can complement it.

Aim for a 12” overhang around your furniture if you have the room to spare for the best look. The same furniture could be combined with a 12’x8’ area rug to leave a foot of overhang around the couch and still give enough room to comfortably use the coffee table.

Matching oval shaped tables with rectangular rugs works to balance a room so it has structure and movement at the same time.  It's a matter of knowing which size area rug to buy, and how to match the table to it proportionally.
