Both sectional couches and standalone sofas make perfect choices for living rooms, game rooms, great rooms, and basements. But they serve different purposes.
With a sectional sofa you need to match it to the shape of the room it is going in, and not every style allows you to change the configuration where a standalone sofa and a set of accent chairs can be configured multiple ways and match multiple room layouts. At the same time, you can add and remove sectional sofa pieces as you need more or less seating. With a standard sofa you’re limited on space, especially if the couch has arms.
Both options can come with beds inside to sleep guests, both can be made from leather, polyester, and other materials. And both can be modern, armless, contemporary, plush, and customized with decor. This is why it can be difficult to make the decision on which to buy.
As a leading designer of modular furniture including both styles of couches, customers ask us regularly which option they should buy. So if you’re on the fence, here’s what we recommend so you can pick the right seating options for your home, office, or business.
Choosing a Sectional over a Standard Sofa
Sectional couches have a huge advantage over a standard sofa when it comes to the amount of people that can be sat, when you’re planning on moving to a home with larger rooms, or you like to entertain and need space for people to move around. If any of these situations sound like your current or future lifestyle, you’ll want to go with a sectional couch over a standalone sofa.
Seat More People
Sectionals can seat more people as they can be longer in length, come without arms, sections can be split apart creating two seating areas instead of only a front facing one, and you can add pieces as your need for additional seats grows.
Stand alone sofas limit the seating space because you cannot remove sides or add to the front of the couch. With a sectional you can order extra pieces to increase the surface area for seating for a fraction of the cost of buying a new and larger couch. Sectionals give you the option to grow as needed and without having to break the bank.
More Configuration and Style Options
If you’re living in an apartment and only need a couch that seats two and has a lounge, a sectional is perfect for this. As you’re ready to move to a single family home or a townhouse, you’ll have a larger living room or basement and need the couch to expand so it can better fill the space.
Sectional couches let you keep the couch you love and add more pieces that attach giving you a new configuration and style that meets your new spacial needs. The same applies to the shapes and sizes of the rooms.
You can start with an l-shape sectional couch in a smaller room. Move to a u-shape for a large and open space, then turn it into a two seat with chaise lounge if you move it to a new room when you buy a new couch or redecorate.
If you plan on downsizing your home because you want to move back to a city apartment or condo, or because you’re an empty nester, it’s easy to donate or sell a piece of a sectional and not have to buy an entirely new couch and chair set.
Increased Floor Space for Entertaining
When you have guests over for a party, the pieces of a sectional sofa can be spread to the corners of the room or against the wall freeing up the center of the room to let people move and congregate so they can enjoy the party. This also allows other people to sit comfortably along the walls which maximizes the room’s floor space.
Sectionals may also have smaller pieces that can be more easily moved than a full couch and brought to a basement or other room letting you open up the floor space so more people can enjoy comfortably. And it's easy to make sure everyone has a place to sit with folding chairs as pieces of the couch will be in a different room.
But sectionals aren’t always the best types of couches to go with. Sometimes a standalone sofa is going to win out.
When to Buy a Sofa Instead of a Sectional Couch
Sectionals are big, and if the manufacturer cancels the style, you can no longer get matching pieces that will easily connect. That could result in you needing to replace it with an expensive new set vs. only having to replace a love seat or accent chair.
When you only need to replace one or two pieces of seating furniture, you save money. These are only a couple of the times when a sofa is better than a sectional couch.
Space Saving
Sectionals are bulky and may not look great when you split them up. Once they’re in your room, they’re in your room and you have to design around them. Sofas have a fixed size and formation making it easy to change the direction they face and they can fit in more room sizes.
If you move a sectional to a smaller room or a space with an odd shape, the couch can feel bulky and overwhelming. A smaller stand alone couch is less likely to overwhelm a smaller room so everything stays balanced and feeling comfortable.
Easier to Futureproof Your Space
When a manufacturer discontinues a style of sectional, you will have a hard time finding replacement pieces and additions that either match or connect. With a regular couch you can mix and match pieces as complementary shapes, colors, and options will always be available. This helps you futureproof your couch and makes it easier to adjust the space as your tastes in design and decor change.
More Flexibility With Room Sizes
If you want more flexibility for room layouts, or for furniture in the size of the room, a regular couch is going to be better than a sectional sofa. With a regular couch and accent chairs or a loveseat you can place them in a U shape along a rectangular coffee table, wrap them around a round table, and create any formation you want.
This lets you move them from a living room to a game room, gives you the flexibility where to use them if you move to a new home as they’ll fit in more room sizes and shapes, and allows you to change the layout as you want to refresh and upgrade your room.
Less Expensive
Regular couches are less expensive than sectionals on average because there is less materials and they’re smaller in size making them easier to ship. When you want to renovate or upgrade your room, it's less expensive to replace a couple of accent chairs than it is to replace an entire seating arrangement.
If cost is a concern for you, go with a sofa instead of a sectional as it saves you a bit more money, especially if you like to change your decor and style more often.
Both sectional couches and sofas are great options for your home. When choosing between the two it comes down to the size and shape of the room, how much flexibility you want, and if you like to refresh your decor or room more or less often and want to stay on budget.
