Expanse Inverse Murphy Bed

The bed itself is a unique design, which is why I decided to go with Expand Furniture. The bed is made of welded steel and quality plywood (not MDF or chipboard), which makes it very sturdy and heavy. The weight is all but offset by the gas pistons that help ease the bed into position. It was also shipped extremely fast! I don’t think you can find this kind of design and quality build anywhere else.

UPDATE: I, unfortunately, had the misfortune of using their old and extremely terrible assembly instructions mere days before new ones were released. As of May 14, 2026, they have completely revamped the instructions and illustrations, making them SOOO much better. When I voiced my frustration in my initial review, Expand contacted me right away to make things right, and they have totally redeemed themselves in my eyes. I can't stress how impressed I am with their customer service! I wish other companies tried as hard as Expand to provide quality products with fantastic service!

We couldn't be happier with our Expanse Inverse Murphy Bed. We needed a queen bed to fit a small townhouse room with low ceiling and a narrow, winding staircase.

The Expand Furniture team was supportive and responsive every step of the way. Eric helped us confirm shipping dimensions beforehand, and visiting their studio confirmed that the quality of their innovative furniture and walnut finish was excellent. Online ordering and delivery tracking were seamless.

When the one-piece bedframe understandably couldn't clear our tight staircase, the team immediately stepped in and arranged for a contractor to cut and reinforce the frame with metal plates inside the room. Eric also guided us on how to access an outlet behind the headboard.

​The assembly instructions were clear. Leveling it on carpet took a little extra patience with shims, but the final result is perfect. Our 9" Endy mattress fits beautifully, and our first guests gave it a 10/10 for a comfortable, completely squeak-free night's sleep. Beautiful design, great quality, and stellar customer service!

The main thing that drew me to this Murphy bed was the unique style. I wanted a Murphy bed that didn’t extend all the way to the ceiling, and this headboard-height design was exactly what I was looking for. I searched extensively and couldn’t find any other companies offering this style unless you go fully custom. It looks great in the room and feels much less imposing than a full-height unit.
In terms of materials, it’s what you would expect from engineered wood. It looks nice and feels solid overall, but I do have some concerns about long-term durability. Engineered wood can be more prone to surface damage, and unlike solid wood, it can be a pain to refinish if it gets scratched or chipped. For the price, I do wish there were a solid wood option for longevity. While the product description is clear about the materials, the $3,000+ price point feels a bit high. Based on what I saw while shopping, $2,000–$2,500 seems more typical for ready-made Murphy beds, while $3,000–$4,000 feels closer to custom territory. That said, I know that this is pretty standard for most Murphy beds sold online, and I’m not aware of all the cost, engineering, and manufacturing factors involved in those material choices.
Assembly was intimidating at first due to the number of parts, especially since my only prior furniture experience was basic IKEA builds. However, once everything was organized, the process was more straightforward than expected. It took about 5–7 hours total, and this is definitely a two-person job. There are several steps where you need someone to hold large, heavy pieces in place. The printed instructions could be clearer, but the YouTube video provided by the company filled in the gaps. I did hire someone to secure it to the wall for safety, but overall, it’s very doable to do it yourself, even without much furniture-building experience.
I did have one issue where two small panels were missing from my shipment, but the customer service was outstanding! They responded quickly and sent regular weekly updates until the replacement parts arrived. That level of communication and follow-through is rare nowadays and really stood out and made up for that small inconvenience.
Overall, I’m very happy with the bed and appreciate the company offering such a unique design. The style and customer service alone make this a standout option.

This bed arrived in the midst of a horrible cold and Expand recommended an installer in my area. They came - they installed - and I found my new space for the next week.

I spent those days imaging what the new space should be and once I was able, the furniture moving began. By the end of the day, our rarely used guest room was transformed into a workout space, my office, anguest room and my getaway sick room.

The was the only Murphy bed that would fit in our space and I’m so glad I found Expand.

Functionally, it is a major contender. Aesthetically it is absolutely beautiful.

I'm a contractor who was hired to build this murphy bed for a client. The assembly was super easy and straight forward. The instructions were clear and everything I needed was supplied. The materials are extremely high quality, the metal bed frame and murphy bed base was made out of quality metal, so I didn't have to worry about wear and tear over time. Since the quality materials were so heavy, a second hand was definitely needed. Once the bed was installed (i installed the stand directly into the studs, the bed was able to fold up and down easily with one hand. The bed not only looked great but it was super functional.

This review is for an Expanse Inverse Murphy bed originally ordered late April. 3/4 boxes were delivered within 2 weeks. 4th box delivered after 4 weeks. Our installer came mid June only to discover that one piece was the wrong color. Replacement part was also the wrong color. 3rd replacement sent expedited shipping on June 30 and as of today, July 5th the shipper has not received the part. My guests have come and gone. This is not good customer service. I'm hoping we eventually get the bed part for use next summer in our vacation home.

The large center piece has a damaged corner on the upper left side which is right at eye level.
The piece with the pull handle is a different color of wood from the rest of the bed.
The pull handle is not made of sturdy enough metal, it literally flexes when you try to lower the bed
The 2 trim side panels show a raw edge on the front of the frame and one was badly scratched.
The instructions are very vague. And we had a Master Carpenter doing our install.
If the pictures and description were better I would’ve not purchased the bed. It doesn’t go all the way to the back panel of the bed and the mattress is always where it can be seen.
I sent some pictures of the damage to customers service but don’t know what is going to happen now. Hopefully they will call me.
If it wasn’t such an ordeal and expense to return it, I would most certainly return it.
Update: I would like to amend my initial review.
Expand Furniture customer service was excellent. (Reed)
They basically sent me an entire new bed kit with the exception of the metal frame and hydraulic system so we could replace the large panel with the chipped corner.
We still had an issue with the panel with the handle not matching the finish on rest of the bed. They did send another panel that does match the rest of the finishes.
The bed is completely installed now and has been slept on approximately 10 times with no problems.
My recommendations are put a mattress on it that is no thicker than 9 inches and as light as possible due to sometimes having to hold up on or lift to raise or lower the bed. The mattress can slip deeper into the frame and catches on the piece of the frame that is against the wall.
I still think the handle should be made of sturdier material and the “wood” part of the bed is still particle board with a veneer finish.
I would recommend handling the bed carefully to avoid any scratches or stressing the frame unnecessarily due to the material it is made from and the difficulty of putting it together. It would be difficult to replace any damaged parts.
We had the bed put together by a master carpenter and when we took it apart to install the panel with the chipped corner, well let’s just say it was good they sent us the entire set of replacement pieces. This bed is not going to hold up to being taken apart and reinstalled. So when you install it plan on leaving it there and leave it if you move out.
The metal frame and hydraulic system seem to be working smoothly.
The price point for the overall quality of the materials seems to be high.
We were given support for our troubles.

Expanse Inverse Murphy Bed

The bed fit perfectly in my space. I love the design and the look. My husband is a contractor and is great with power tools, so I thought we would have an easy time putting the bed together. The instructions were very difficult to follow. After making a phone call to the company they directed us to a you tube video. This video was produced by people who put these together one after another. Several steps were omitted, leaving us to guess. Our bed is in a corner and not in the middle of a wall. Bolting the bed to the wall when it was called for in the directions made the completion very difficult. Through many hours of back and forth, we completed the bed and do love it. Beware of the assembly.

We bought the Expanse Reverse Murphy bed mainly because of its unique design vs the Murphy beds in the market that require a box housing. We had a few issues with the instructions, installation, and minor damage in the shipment. This installation is complicated and could be clarified more, so get a professional to do it for you (that’s what I did). We gave Expand some feedback. Expand furniture followed up with us; Reed was very understanding and helpful. I liked that they stood behind their product and their name and provided support and/or solutions to satisfy us as customers. Things go wrong sometimes, but when people make an effort to correct it then you have to respect that.
